Pomegranates are loaded with antioxidants and have amazing healthy properties. We have long wanted to grow Pomegranates here in Washington but our relative lack of summer heat and winter cold is not to their liking. Recently, varieties have come to our attention that are hardier and earlier ripening than varieties previously available. These are self-fertile shrubs that like sunny well drained soils. Since they are grown from cuttings they can re-sprout true to name if the top is damaged or destroyed.

These varieties need to be protected the first winter with a thick mulch. After establishment they should be considerably hardier. While pomegranates are generally considered hardy only to 10° F, these varieties may prove to be much hardier once established. We can make no guarantees but offer these plants to experimenters willing to trial them. Please let us know of your results.
