Akane - Medium sized crisp, red apple. Fine for fresh eating and suitable for drying. It is an early and reliable bearer. Resistant to mildew, scab, and fire blight. Self-fertile. Zone 5-9.
Arkansas Black - Crisp, firm and juicy with a great sweet taste, for dessert or cooking. Its pleasant aroma is an excellent addition to a cider blend. Dark purplish red skin with yellow flesh. Late ripening and an excellent keeper of medium sized fruit. These trees are resistant to cedar apple rust and codling moth. Originated in Arkansas around 1870. Not the most productive of apple trees and needs a pollinator which can be any variety EXCEPT for Gravenstein.
Ashmeads Kernal - One of the best tasting of all apples. Crisp, tart and juicy when first harvested, they improve and taste sweeter a few weeks after harvest and will keep for 4 months. Small to medium sized fruits with yellow/green skin covered in brown russeting. Flesh is yellow and fragrant. Used for dessert and sauce and makes a fine cider. These have some resistance to scab and mildew. An English variety from the early 1700's. Zone 3.
Beni Shogun Fuji - Fuji is a very late ripening apple. These ripen nearly a month earlier with the same crisp, sweet flavor expected of Fuji. A very good keeper. Zone 5-9.
Bramleys - Large, firm, juicy, tart fruits are often picked green for pies and sauces. Allowed to fully ripen, fruit is yellow/red and suitable for fresh eating. These are also used in cider blends. High vitamin C content and especially high in beneficial antioxidants. Vigorous and heavy bearing trees in mid-season. Scab and mildew resistant. Pollen sterile, needs a late blooming pollinator such as Northern Spy, Gold Rush, Wolf River or Winecrisp. Zone 4-9.
Chehalis - Large, crisp greenish yellow apple, similar in looks and taste to Golden Delicious, except that it is some what scab resistant. The apples ripen in early fall. Self-fruitful. Zone 5-9.
Cox Orange Pippin - England's favorite apple. Excellent flavor, juicy, sweet and crisp. Medium-sized round fruits, yellow/orange skin with reddish brown streaks. It is a vigorous apple variety. Mid-season ripening. Self-fruitful.
Enterprise - Large, red, crisp and flavorful. Flavor improves with storage. Harvest late October and it will keep up to 6 months. These are resistant to scab, mildew, fireblight and cedar apple rust. Pollinates with all except King & Gravenstein. Zone 4-9.
Fiesta - Very flavorful, more disease resistant and easier to grow than most Cox types. It has a mid to late season bloom period. Somewhat self-fruitful. A hybrid of Cox's Orange Pippin x Idared. Zone 4-9.
Freedom - Medium to large red apples that are juicy, crisp and very good for fresh eating, baking and cider. Mid-season ripening. These are resistant to scab, mildew and fireblight. Zone 4.
Goldrush - Best keeping, disease resistant apple. Ripens in early November. Improves in quality after 2 months in storage and keeps up to 7 months. Scab immune, resistant to mildew and fireblight. It is a yellow, crisp, medium sized apple with excellent flavor. Zone 4-9.
Golden Russet - Medium sized golden brown fruit with excellent sweet flavor and yellow flesh. For dessert and cider blends. It is a very old American variety. Scab resistant.
Goodland - Canadian variety with round red fragrant fruits known for flavor, crispness and lots of juice. These ripen in late August. Hardy to Zone 2.
Granny Smith - Very late, yellow green sweet/tart apple. Commercially, it is harvested before it's fully ripe when it is still green, hard, and tart. These are known to be highly nutitious. Zone 5-9.
Gravenstein - Very flavorful, crisp, and juicy. Used for fresh eating, sauce and pies. Vigorous tree. These trees are somewhat fireblight and scab resistant. Pollinators: Spartan, William’s Pride, Akane, Prima, Liberty. Zone 2-9.
Honeycrisp - The best flavored hardy apple. Large red fruits are crisp, juicy and sweet. Great keeper. Moderate disease resistance. These originated in Minnesota. Zone 3-8.
Hudsons Golden Gem - Big golden brown russeted fruit. Sweet, crisp, and juicy fruit with a terrific flavor. Late ripening and a good keeper. Midseason bloom period. Any unharvested fruit will hang on the tree for wildlife over winter. It is resistant to fireblight, scab and mildew. Zone 3-9.
Jonagold - One of the most highly acclaimed apples for flavor. A cross between Jonathan and Golden Delicious, and considered better than either parent. Large, red-striped fruits are crisp and juicy, great fresh or for pies. Excels in Western Washington State and other cool summer locations, however it is not particularly disease resistant. These are a good annual producer but is also pollen sterile. Mid-season bloom, mid-fall ripening on a vigorous tree.
King - Red-striped, sweet and crisp dessert apple that ripens in October. These can be pollinated by Northern Spy, Sweet 16, Gold Rush and Prairie Fire. Also known as Tomkins King, or King of Tomkins County. Zone 5-9.
Liberty - Very resistant to scab, mildew, cedar apple rust and fireblight. These have attractive red fruit that is medium size, with a crisp sweet/tart flavor and is especially high in antioxidants. Midseason ripening, very productive. Bears annually and is a good keeper. Self-fertile. Early- to mid-season bloom; pollinates with Akane, Prima, William’s Pride, Spartan, and most others. Zone 4-9.
Lodi - Very early ripening with tart, crisp, yellow fruit. Used for pies and sauces. Resembles Transparent but less mealy and larger; keeps better. These are scab resistant. Pollinated by all but Gravenstein and King. Zone 2-9.
Macoun - Dark reddish purple fruit that is sweet, firm and very flavorful. Blooms late and is very productive. It is known to be highly fireblight resistant. A hybrid of McIntosh x Jersey Black. Zone 4.
Monty's Surprise - Exclusive: Recently released into the United States by Burnt Ridge Nursery. This has very large, attractive fruits that are juicy and flavorful with a citrus like after taste. The flesh has extraordinary amounts of phytonutrients, and the skin has the highest levels of beneficial flavonoids of any apple. These apples have demonstrated an ability to suppress the growth of colon cancer cells better than any other apple variety, according to a study by the French National Institute for Health and Medical Research. Norland - Red striped fruit of good quality for fresh eating or cooking. A natural dwarf. Ripens early, keeps 4 months in cold storage. It is a Canadian variety. Hardy to -40 F. Zone 2.
Northern Spy - Large, juicy fruit that has all purpose uses. Late bloomer. A great keeper that is also fireblight resistant. It is a variety from New York found prior to 1800. Zone 3-9.
Nova EasyGro - Large, red-striped fruit on a yellow background. White flesh is crisp, sweet, and juicy. Good fresh and for cooking. Keeps very well. It is resistant to scab, powdery mildew, cedar rust and fire blight. Zone 2.
Pink Pearl - Reddish-pink flowers followed by medium to large fruits that are quite fragrant with a bright pink flesh. It is a good dessert apple, thought most commonly used to add color in cider, sauce and pies. Blooms and ripens fairly early. Zone 4-9.
Prima - This is attractive, has large red fruits with a juicy white flesh, and is a very good multipurpose variety. Very highly scab resistant, also fireblight, mildew and cedar apple rust resistant. Dependable and heavy yielding.
Rebella - Developed specifically for its disease resistance, fruit quality and productivity. These are resistant to scab, rust, mildew, fire blight, bacterial canker and European red mite. The large fruit is red to reddish-yellow, sweet with well balanced acid. Bloom time is mid to late. Apples ripen mid to late September. Also called 'Bella'.
Redfree - Heavy bearer of early ripening medium sized fruit. Sweet/tart flavor. Resistant to scab, mildew, fireblight and rust. These are very high in beneficial antioxidants.
Sansa - Early ripening, luscious dessert apple with good resistance to fireblight and scab. Sweet, juicy and crisp red fruits keep well for an early ripener. Early midseason bloom. It is a cross between Gala and Akane.
Spartan - Dark red, dessert-quality apple that is also good for cooking. Excellent keeper. Self-fertile. High antioxidant level. Resistant to scab, mildew and fireblight. It is a hybrid of McIntosh x Newton. Zone 3-9.
Spygold -
Sweet 16 - Medium-large red striped fruit is firm, crisp, juicy and aromatic. Has a sweet, pleasing flavor. Productive and precocious, a good keeper. Blooms late. Resistant to scab and fireblight. It is a very cold hardy Minnesota selection. Zone 3-8.
William's Pride - Very early, large, red dessert apple, crisp, juicy, and flavorful. Scab immune, resistant to fire blight, cedar apple rust and powdery mildew. It is pollinated by all but Gravenstein and King. Zone 4-9.
Winecrisp - Sweet red fruits are of exceptional flavor. They are also juicy and crisp. Mid fall ripening, high yielding, the fruits hang well on the tree and keep very well into spring. Scab immune and resistant to the other major apple diseases. Mid to late bloom time in spring. New release from PRI, the culmination of 60 plus year old breeding program for desirable, disease resistant varieties. Jonathan, Newton, and Cox's Orange Pippen are among the parents. USPP No. 20437.
Winter Banana - Large yellowfruits with a pink blush. Banana-like fragrance, crisp. mild, and juicy flesh for desserts or cider. Excellent pollinator. Keeps until March. Self fruitful. These have a naturally dwarfing and compact form. Zone 4-9.
Wolf River - An old Wisconsin variety with gigantic fruit. Great pie apple - only requiring 1 or 2 fruits per pie. It is resistant to scab, mildew, and cedar rust. Zone 2-9.
Wynooche - One of the best quality early ripening and disease resistant apples. Large, firm, juicy fruits with a great flavor and crisp texture. A yellow apple with red stripes. Suitable for fresh eating and cooking. Early bloom. A good pollinator for other early blooming varieties. It was named near Aberdeen, WA from a numbered selection out of NY state. Zone 4-9.
