This ancestral tree of the redwood was thought to be extinct and known only from fossils until in 1947 a small isolated grove was discovered in a remote part of China. Dawn Redwood trees are bright tree in the summer then have a brilliant golden to fox-red colors in autumn, they are deciduous conifers and will drop its leaves every year. Tolerant of moist sites and polluted air. Fast growth of up to 7 ft. a year if in a favorable location containing sun, high water table, acidic soil (pH of 4.5) and low competition. Attaining maturity in 30 years to about 90 ft. and then reaching heights up to 150 ft. by 45 ft. wide, this is a tree for a large landscape. Older trees will have widespread buttressed trunks.
