Selected hazelnuts for quality, high yields, disease resistance and insect resistance.
Barcelona - Standard commercial variety, with a medium to large round nut. It is hardy and productive. Zone 5 - 8.
Eta - Recent OSU release, late flowering like Theta. Used to enhance pollination and yields in Jefferson. It is also compatible with all but Delta. Produces midsized nuts, mid season ripening.
Halles Giant - Hardy Northern Germany origin, considered a suitable pollinator for any other hazelnut variety. It produces a large attractive nut of good quality. With moderate resistance to Eastern Filbert Blight. Zone 4-8.
Jefferson - Produces a heavy yield of large, flavorful nuts that fill their shells well. Similar to the standard Barcelona variety, but with fewer blanks and with a low incidence of shriveled kernels and moldy nuts. A long bloomer over a long receptive period. An Oregon State University release with resistance to Eastern Filbert Blight disease and high resistance to big bud mite. Commercial orchardists are planting York or Yamhill to pollinate at the beginning of its receptive period, and Eta or Theta to cover the late blooming period, to ensure maximum potential yield. Seedlings were open pollinated with Yamhill and Eta, all blight resistant selections. As seedlings, these will be slower to come into bearing than cloned varieties and will be variable in nut size, yield and overall quality, though, with their superior genetics will tend to be vastly superior to average seedling hazelnuts.
Tonda di Giffoni - Leading Italian variety, commanding a premium price due to its outstanding flavor and ability to blanch perfectly. Medium-sized round nuts. It is productive, highly blight and mite resistant. Pollinator for all varieties but Barcelona and Jefferson. Zone 5-8.
Winkler - A self fertile selection of American Hazelnut. It is bush or shrub sized.
Yamhill - A short, spreading tree that is very productive of small, round nuts. These are early ripening and have the best kernel quality. Complete resistance to Eastern Filbert Blight. Pollinates with all listed varieties.
