Medium-large, plump, light-colored kernels of very good quality. Well sealed shell, yet easy to crack. Late leafing and flowering to help escape spring frosts. Self fruitful and productive. Grafted onto NC Black Walnut rootstock to give resistance to oak root fungus. Howard English Walnut Tree is small for a walnut, so they can be planted 20 ft. apart.

RECOMMENDED GROWING AND CARE:
Full sun, balanced moisture, mildly acidic soils and good drainage. Sites with deep (three feet or more), well-drained loamy soils with pH values between 6.0 and 8.0 are best. Intolerant of flooding. Grafted onto Black walnut rootstock to increase tolerance to heavy soils. Corrective pruning to maintain central leader as necessary. Usually 4-5 large scaffolding branches allowed.

DISEASE RESISTANCE: Good. Grafted onto NC Black Walnut rootstock to give resistance to oak root fungus. Like other late-leafing varieties, Howard has reduced blight and codling moth susceptibility.
