A spectacular, fast-growing ornamental. A mass of vanilla-like fragrant lavender-blue flowers that cover the tree before leaves emerge. Sometimes called fox-glove tree due to the blossom resemblance to foxgloves. Huge, heart-shaped leaves are up to 2 ft. broad. The edible flowers from an Empress Tree can be added to salads and can make a good honey. Valuable wood for cabinetry and has been traditionally used in Japan for making stringed musical instruments. Easy to grow in full sun. Native to Asia. Also known as "Royal Paulownia" named after the daughter of a Russian Tsar.

RECOMMENDED GROWING AND CARE:
Full sun, balanced moisture, drought-tolerant once established. Resents heavy clay soils. Can be pruned to the ground annually to encourage shrubby stems with massive leaf sizes at the expense of blooming. Develops long pods that split in fall and disperse bean-like seeds that sprout vigorously.
